Puppy Jail

Sometimes I wonder if Kilo doesn't do this stuff on purpose, just to see how long my wallet and patience can hold out.

This week, Luke started a dog fight over some prized kibble. Unfortunately Kilo refuses to back down when foods involved, so of course in the end they're rolling around on the floor acting like idiots. Luck would have it that I'm at work, so mom (the puppy sitter) has to break them up and in the process, Kilo accidentally gets her instead of Luke. Because the wounds were punctures and my mother is prone to infection and allergic to most antibiotics, she needed to go to the hospital (no stitches required, but an equally horrendous tetanus shot).

Monday rolls around and we get a call from animal control. Hello? County law? Nice to meet you. Why yes, I'd love to board my dog at the animal hospital for ten days just so you can find out if a 4 month old puppy has rabies. Sure, no problem. Never mind he's too young to have had the shot yet. A $1500 dollar fine if we don't take him right this moment? Even though he's our dog and didn't bite some random stranger? And even though its been two days since she got bit? Right this moment? Well why not I say, I'll just skip off work and run his furry behind to the vets office where they have to make special arrangements to fit him in and openly admit you're the worst county in the state to have a pet related accident. Well great. You have a nice day too, county law, and I hope all of your other little rules aren't this stupid.

Now, don't get me wrong, I definitely see the need to have laws protecting people from vicious animals and/or pet related diseases. But there needs to be some room to breathe. Apparently, most people in our county who have accidents with their pets just openly lie to the hospitals because they don't want to have to deal with animal control. I can just see how that goes: "This? Naw, that's not a dog bite, he's just got really long nails. I really need to get those babies filed down, poor dog's just trying to say 'hi'." Kilo hardly qualifies as a vicious animal and it's not like he attacked some unrelated person on the street who needs their rights protected. He got in a dog fight and accidentally bit my moms hand, she didn't even have to have stitches. Granted, it hurts, and it's not fun, but dude -10 days of incarceration? Never mind we could simply keep him on house arrest and take him to the vet on the 10th day for evaluation. And never mind the fact that people who truly do have a vicious dog probably aren't going to tell the truth about it anyway.

Ah well, almost two weeks without the little monster. We're only on day one, and everyone is already missing him. There's no air vent cover or loud thudding as he runs through the house now. It's funny how something that takes up so much energy and is more of a chore than an enjoyment, can be missed so quickly. I suppose his little affectionate moments do make up for a lot of his puppy behaviors. Kilo will spend most of week 17 and all of week 18 away from us so there will be no updates. We weighed him before he went in however, for week 17, and he was at 50lbs. He'll be fixed the last day of his stay (poor guy) and will come home as soon as I'm allowed to pick him up.

Week 16

This week at work I've been working with a 9 month old, 100 pound mule that moonlights as a Labrador Retriever, and as a result I come home from work mentally and physically exhausted. The last thing I want to do is train my own little mule. But I can't really preach at other owners to train, and then not train my own dog now can I? Well, I could, but really, who'd come to me for help once they caught a glimpse of him? I'm thinking - nobody. Anyway, my sister just happened to be around tonight and felt inclined to photograph the little monster. So we now have a video of Kilo performing some of his tricks. :)

Kilo's 44lbs this week. Another week without a vet visit. My bank account is quite pleased. Kilo got to explore some nature trails for the first time and had great fun romping around and pulling the tassels off all the plants - and to my great surprise sent very little of the greenery down to his stomach. Are we past the 'eat absolutely everything' stage? . . . Kilo! Wait! Don't eat that! . . .

Naptimes for Puppies

Kilo's Favorite Thing:
You can't see it, because it's covered by a blob of dog fur, but underneath that unconscious mess is an air vent. The most wonderfully splendid invention ever created by man - according to my dog anyway. He's still managing to squeeze himself between the wall and my desk but eventually I predict only his head will fit. In case you're curious he also spends car time with his nose glued to the air vent. Ah, cool air, how wonderful it must be - I no longer know what it feels like since there's a 40lb dog plugging it up but I imagine its nice.

Kilo's Second Favorite Thing

(look! I figured out how to post videos!)

This is one of his and my favorite toys, though for very different reasons. I assume he likes it because it provides yummy goodness; I like it because it wears him out and keeps him entertained all at the same time.

The following picture is NOT one of Kilo's favorite things. In fact it might be his most hated experience of all time. But he at least has resigned himself to it now. On a positive note it's much nicer/bigger than his old crate and will hopefully allow him to stay cooler. If he outgrows this, I'm in trouble.

Healthy at last?

Week 14 - 32 lbs
We went to the vet. Yes, you read right, we went to the vet again - it's their own fault really, those benches are just so comfy who can resist? I mean, could you? I doubt it. ;) You haven't sat on them.

Puppy had diarrhea off and on for two weeks and when he dropped 2 lbs because of it, I'd had enough and dragged him in to get some medicine. I love the age we live in. There's nothing more unpleasant than a 32lb dog whose bowels aren't operating correctly (though I suppose it could be more unpleasant if he were full grown); however, one day of meds and life is good again. Medicine is wonderful.

Oh, and please kindly ignore the position of my dogs mouth in the above photograph, and if you could ignore the glowing eyes as well that would be most appreciated - I like to try and pretend he isn't a little demon that eats grandmas for breakfast.

Week 15 - 39lbs
Please note my little monsters good behavior in the above photograph. He's waiting for his treat! and it's right there! Smelling delicious and looking appealing! and what is he doing? He's waiting! Ah, wonderful reassurance that it isn't possible for him to be bad 24/7 - at some point he's being good. Actually this weeks been relatively calm for us, he's been healthy and even if he's not made angel status he's at least no longer ranked amongst the snappers and attackers.
